Dead Key Fob? How to Tell If It's Just the Battery (Vancouver Driver's Guide)

If your key fob only works when you're standing next to the car, or you have to press the button a few times before the doors respond, start with the battery. It's the most common cause, the part costs a few dollars, and you can usually change it yourself in five minutes.

If a fresh battery doesn't help, or the car won't start with the fob inside, the fault is somewhere else: the fob's circuit board, the transponder chip, or the car's ignition or key-detection system. That's the point where a locksmith's diagnosis saves you from buying parts you don't need.

Signs it's the battery and not the fob

Fob batteries usually fade over a few weeks rather than dying all at once. Watch for these:

  • Shorter range. You used to unlock the car from across the parking lot. Now you have to be close.
  • Extra presses. The lock responds on the second or third press instead of the first.
  • A dim or missing light. If your fob has an LED, a weak flash or no flash is a common low-battery sign.
  • A dashboard warning. Many newer cars show "key battery low" before the fob stops working.
  • Doors unlock but the car won't start. On some push-button-start cars, starting trouble shows up before the remote buttons fail.

If you have a spare fob, try it. If the spare works normally, the problem is the first fob or its battery, not the car.

Why a wet fob behaves differently

Vancouver's rain matters here for one reason: moisture. Water that gets into the fob through a cracked case, a drop in a puddle or years of pocket condensation can corrode the battery contacts. When that happens, a new battery won't fix it, because the problem is the connection, not the power. If the trouble started after the fob got wet, or it acts up mostly in wet weather, mention that when you call. Don't keep swapping batteries or try to clean the circuit board yourself.

What battery replacement costs in Vancouver

The cost depends on who does the work and what your fob needs. These are typical ranges, not quotes:

  • Doing it yourself. Most fobs take a CR2032 or CR2025 coin cell, which costs about $3 to $8 at a pharmacy or hardware store. Check the code on your old battery before you buy.
  • A dealership service counter. Many charge $20 to $50 in labour to open the case and swap the battery.
  • A mobile locksmith. Expect a service call charge plus the battery. A locksmith can also check for corrosion, a cracked board or a programming fault while they're there.
  • A full fob replacement. If the fob itself has failed, a new cut and programmed fob usually runs $150 to $400, depending on the make and the programming it needs.

If you're not sure which of these you need, a locksmith can usually tell quickly whether it's a $5 battery or a $200 fob. That's worth a call before you order a replacement fob online.

How to change a key fob battery

Most fobs open by hand or with a coin. A few have a small screw or hide the seam behind the mechanical key.

  • Find the seam. Look for a notch or slide release on the side or back. Your owner's manual shows where it is if it isn't obvious.
  • Open it gently. The plastic clips are brittle, especially on older fobs. If it resists, check the manual instead of forcing it.
  • Photograph the battery first. Note which side faces up so the new one goes in the same way.
  • Fit the new battery and test it. Snap the case shut and try the lock and unlock buttons next to the car.

Coin batteries are dangerous if swallowed, so keep new and used ones away from children and pets.

If the fob still doesn't respond after a new battery, stop opening and closing it. Repeated prying is how cases crack and contacts bend, which turns a $5 fix into a $200 one.

If a new battery didn't fix it, or you're locked out and can't wait, a mobile locksmith can diagnose the fob where your car is parked. Our car key battery replacement service in Vancouver covers the battery swap and checks for corrosion or wiring faults. If you're stuck outside your car, book our car lockout service and ask for the arrival time when you call. Have your car's make, model and year ready, and tell us whether you've already tried a new battery or a spare fob.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which battery my key fob takes?

Check your owner's manual, or read the code printed on the old battery. CR2032 and CR2025 are the most common, but use the exact type your fob specifies.

Can a dead fob battery stop my car from starting?

On many push-button-start cars, yes. Most of those cars also have a backup method, such as holding the fob against the start button, and your owner's manual explains it.

My fob still doesn't work after a new battery. What now?

Check that the battery is the right type and sits the right way up. If it does, the likely causes are corrosion on the contacts, a cracked circuit board or a programming fault. Have a locksmith check the fob and your car's ignition system before you buy a replacement.
