Three different doors get called the garage door. Each takes different hardware.
Most Vancouver garages are a separate building at the back of the lot, facing the lane, with a walk-in door beside the overhead. The hardware comes to your driveway or lane, and the work is done there.

How a garage lock visit works

We come to the garage
The technician works from the driveway or the lane. If the garage is behind a gate or the lane is blocked, say so when you call. Arrival is confirmed on the call.

Fit, cut, then test closed
We fit the lock, cut keys on site, and pin the cylinder to your house key if you want one key. Then the bolt is thrown several times with the door closed, because a door that has moved with the season can latch fine in the hand and refuse in the frame.

Detached garages off the lane: the side door is usually the weak one
On a laned lot the garage is its own building, and its walk-in door is often the only door on the property without a proper deadbolt.
Knob latch and nothing else
Many east-side garages in Hastings-Sunrise and East Vancouver still carry the hardware they were built with. The bikes, tools and tires inside are behind the softest lock on the lot.
Heavier doors on the west side
Behind the houses in Dunbar, Kerrisdale and Point Grey the garage is detached as well. It is the door people forget they are locked out of until they are standing at the back of a dark lot.
A split jamb is frame work
If the wood around the door has split or the door no longer sits square, a new lock will not hold. That is a job for door repair, and we say so on the call.

Deadbolt on a walk-in side door
The door beside the overhead is fitted with a deadbolt matched to its thickness and existing prep. Keys are cut at the truck, and the bolt is tested with the door closed.

Garage and house on one key
If the garage cylinder shares a keyway with your front entry, we repin it to the key you already carry. If it does not, a matching cylinder replaces it, so you still carry one key.

When the garage has become a laneway house
A converted garage or coach house has a front door now, and it should be on its own key.
Separate keys per dwelling
Each household holds access only to the home it lives in. The owner's key can still cover shared doors such as the gate and the utility room.
Why alike keying stops fitting

Keypads for tenants

In a tower, the underground garage is shared, and its hardware is ordered by the strata.

A manual lock on a door with an opener
Once an electric opener is fitted, a T-handle or slide bolt left engaged will fight the motor every time someone presses the remote.
Take it out of service
The simplest fix is to remove the manual lock so the opener's drive holds the door shut.
Or keep it for power cuts
Set it up as the lock you use when the power is out and the door has been released from the opener. The motor and remotes are covered under garage door opener repair.
01Can you put a deadbolt on my garage side door?
Yes. It is the most common garage job, because the walk-in door on a detached garage is usually softer than anything on the house. We match a deadbolt to the door and cut the keys on site. The total is confirmed on the call.
02Can the garage be on the same key as my house?
Usually. If the garage cylinder and your front door share a keyway, we repin the garage to your house key. If not, a matching cylinder replaces it. Tell us the brand on the front entry when you call.
03My garage T-handle turns but the door stays shut. Why?
Usually the lock is fine. A T-handle turns a cam that pulls latch rods out of the track on each side, so a handle that spins freely means a rod, clip or cam has failed. We rebuild it where parts exist, or fit a new keyed unit.
04Do you fit keypad locks on garages?
On the walk-in side door, yes, and the total is confirmed on the call. The overhead door's keypad pairs to the opener, not to a lock, so that is booked under garage door opener repair.
05Does my garage need a deadbolt into the house?
Only if the garage is attached, which is more common on newer infill and townhomes. That door is often hung with a plain knob. On a detached garage there is no connecting door at all.
06Can you change the lock on my strata parkade gate or fob?
No. Parkade gates, remotes and building fobs belong to your strata or property manager, and we never copy or program fobs. We work on garages at your own house, laneway house or business unit.
