Filing cabinet, desk and locker lock repair

Filing cabinets, desks, credenzas, lockers and storage units all use the same family of furniture locks. We repair them on site across Vancouver.

A filing cabinet lock is a cheap mechanism guarding things that aren't: personnel files, client records, a cash float. When the key goes missing or a drawer seizes, it's the lock that has failed, not the cabinet. We work on filing cabinets, desk drawers, credenzas, lateral files, lockers and tool chests, at your office or your home.

Lost filing cabinet key replacement

Most office furniture locks carry a key code, a short stamp such as R103 or 8053, on the face of the lock, the edge of the plug, or the bow of the original key. Read us that code on the phone and a replacement can be cut before the van leaves: the fastest and cheapest fix there is. Photograph the lock face if you're unsure what you're looking at. Having no code is not a dead end. On common locks we pull the plug on site and cut a key to match, and where the lock is too worn for that we fit a new cylinder with two keys.

Cam locks, plunger locks and gang locks

Cam locks

A round barrel with a flat metal tongue that swings behind the drawer frame. The most common cabinet and locker lock, and the easiest to rekey or replace.

Plunger and push locks

Push the button in to lock, turn a key to release. Common on older wooden desks and display cases.

Gang locks

One lock at the top drives a bar down the inside of the cabinet and bars every drawer at once. When it fails nothing opens, and often the bar has jammed rather than the lock.

Jammed drawers, broken keys and latch faults

  • Lost key: cut from the lock's code, read from the plug, or a new cylinder with two keys
  • Key snapped off in the lock: extraction, then a new key or cylinder
  • Drawer jammed or seized: freeing the cam, gang bar or slide
  • Drawer that won't latch, or drifts open: cam alignment and strike adjustment
  • Rekeying after staff turnover, so old keys stop working
  • Keyed-alike sets: cabinets, desks and lockers matched to one key

Rekeying office cabinets after staff turnover

Turnover is why most Vancouver offices call us about cabinets. Someone leaves, nobody is sure how many copies of the HR key went with them, and the answer is a rekey: same lock body, new key, old keys dead. The other common ask is consolidation. Offices that collected cabinets one at a time end up with a drawer of near-identical keys and no idea which fits what, so we key a group alike until one key runs the lot, with spares from key cutting & duplication. Where cabinets sit inside a wider access plan, that's commercial locksmith work.

Opening a locked cabinet without damage

Non-destructive first, always. Most cabinet locks can be picked, impressioned, or released by reaching the cylinder clip behind the drawer face, leaving the cabinet unmarked. That's the usual outcome, but we won't promise it every time: a seized mechanism or a higher-security lock sometimes leaves drilling as the only way in. When it does, we drill the cylinder rather than the cabinet and fit a replacement lock on the spot. Fire-rated cabinets and proper safes are a different job, covered under safe services.

Proof of ownership before we open a cabinet

Before we open any cabinet we need to see that it's yours to open. A piece of mail, a lease, a business card matching the office, or a word from the property manager is normally all it takes. Every legitimate locksmith asks, and it's what keeps a cabinet of personnel files shut to someone with no business in it.

Filing cabinet lock questions

Do you work on desks, credenzas and lockers as well?

Yes. Desk drawers, credenzas, lateral files, display cases, staff lockers and tool chests all use the same cam and plunger locks. Same job, same visit.

The key turns but the drawer still won't open. What's wrong?

Usually mechanical rather than a lock fault: a gang bar out of alignment, a bent cam, or a drawer packed past the point where the slides will move.
