What a safe locksmith in Vancouver does

Safe work is a separate trade from door locks. Before any tool touches the door, we need the make, the model and the type of lock fitted to it.

We check ID and proof the safe is yours, then test the simple causes first: power, the override keyway, bolts binding. Arrival is confirmed on the call.

Open, re-code, test
Once open, you choose the new combination and we run the lock through it with the door held open. Worn parts are priced before anything is ordered.

Keypad safe on a shelf
A small home safe with a lit keypad and an override key is the call we get most. The code is forgotten, or the batteries have gone and the bolt will not throw.
We test power and the override keyway first, then open it and set a new code with you.

Wall keypad and lockbox at an office
Office keypad boxes and wall-mounted code locks hold keys and documents for a whole team. A code that nobody has kept, or a unit that stops responding, locks everyone out.
We open it for an authorized person, then re-code and test it before we leave.

Your own home
Photo ID that matches the address, or the unit number in a condo.
Renting
Photo ID, plus a note from your landlord or strata that the safe is yours or that you may open it.
A business
Someone who can authorize the work for the company, not whoever is on shift. More on commercial locksmith work.

A safe that came with the house
Wall and floor safes turn up in older houses, such as those in Shaughnessy. The combination rarely transferred with the title.
Dry, not broken
A mechanical lock that sat shut for decades is usually dry. We open it, then service the lock so you are not calling about it again next year.
Floor safes
A floor safe set into a slab can't be moved without concrete work, which is a different trade. We open and re-code it where it sits.

In a tower, the safe is usually a small keypad box in a closet. It holds your own things, so we open it inside your unit.
Dead battery
The most common fault. The keypad lights, but the motor has no current to throw the bolt.
Code unknown
The code was set by a previous owner or a guest and never cleared. We open it and set a new one.
Fixing it down
Ask your strata before drilling a concrete slab. A light box on a shelf is only a container that can be carried off.
Lobby, parkade and common-area locks belong to your strata. We open the safe inside your unit only. Strata towers in the West End are common.

If your safe won't open, do this first
Forcing a safe is how an opening becomes a replacement. A few things to try, and a few to leave alone.
✓Try first
- Fresh batteries, and the external battery contacts if the safe has them
- The override key, if it came with one
- Your paperwork for the combination or code card
✕Leave alone
- Hitting, prying or drilling the door
- Guessing codes again and again
- Turning a dial that spins freely. Call instead.
Safe work is usually booked. A business that cannot trade without what is inside should see emergency locksmith.
01Can you open a safe if I forgot the combination?
Often, yes. Give us the make and model on the call and we tell you whether the lock can be opened without drilling. We check ID and proof the safe is yours first.
02Do you open safes without drilling?
We start with non-destructive methods and drill only if the lock leaves no other way in. If drilling comes up, you hear it before any work starts.
03What do I need to show before you open a safe?
Photo ID that matches the address, plus proof the safe is yours to open. A tenant needs a note from the landlord or strata. A business needs someone who can authorize the work.
04The dial spins freely and nothing happens. What should I do?
Stop turning it and call. A dial that spins freely can mean a loose part inside the lock, and more turning can make the job harder. Describe what it is doing on the call.
05Do you open bank safety deposit boxes?
No. A box inside a bank vault belongs to the bank and its own process. We work on safes in homes and businesses.
