Keypad, fingerprint, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth: which smart lock?
The right type depends on who uses the door and how.
Most smart locks combine more than one way in. Pick by how you want to open the door, then check that it suits the door itself.
- KeypadA code on the outside. Nothing to carry, and easy to hand to a guest or cleaner
- FingerprintOpens on your print. Good for a family door, less so for a door many people share
- BluetoothOpens from your phone when you are near. Simple, and light on battery
- Wi-FiLock and unlock from anywhere, and see who came in. Needs a signal at the door and uses more battery
- Offline keypadNo app and no network. Nothing to update, but codes are changed at the lock
If your door is in a concrete building, tell us. Signal through concrete is often weak, and that can decide Wi-Fi against Bluetooth. Our smart lock buyer's guide goes deeper.

Retrofit or replace: will a smart lock fit my door?
A smart deadbolt needs a round hole bored through the face of the door. Many older Vancouver doors never had one.

Boring a door cannot be undone. Check what you are allowed to change first.
Retrofit
We swap the lock you have for the smart one and keep the door as it is. This is the cheapest route and is easy to reverse.
Replace or add
On a mortise door we can fit a second, bored deadbolt above the old lock. Or the keypad goes on a side or inside door and the street door stays as it is.
Door first
A motor has none of the force of your wrist. If the door sticks or the bolt misses the strike, we fix that first. See door repair.

Phone-controlled smart deadbolt
The lock sits on your existing bored door and pairs with an app on your phone. We fit it, check the bolt throws cleanly and show you how to set it up.

Smart lock on a handle-set entry door
Some street doors carry a lever handle on a long backplate. A smart lock can sit below the handle, and the door still opens with a normal turn of the lever.
These doors often need a closer look at the existing lock first. Door fit comes before the electronics.

In a strata building, your suite door is yours. The lobby, parkade and building fobs belong to the strata.

Ask before you buy
Many bylaws cover hardware on corridor doors. Ask your council whether a keypad is allowed. We can't answer for them, and it is cheaper to ask first.
A key that still works
Some stratas want a normal key to stay in the door. Some smart locks take a standard cylinder, so we fit one on your building's keyway. Others have a fixed core. Give us the model before you open the box.
If the answer is no
A keypad on the inside face of the door usually passes. The outside of the door stays as the building expects. For high-security keyways, see high-security locks.
The lock and the door both affect the total. The total for your address is confirmed on the call.
Door prep, such as an adaptor plate or a strike fix, is extra and is quoted on the call. Several locks at one address are quoted together.

How a smart lock installation works

Door checked, lock fitted
We measure the bore and thickness and watch the bolt meet the strike. Any frame fix is priced before we unscrew anything. Then the lock goes in.

Codes and handover
We set your owner code, then one code per person, and pair the lock if it is networked. You keep the override keys and a note of who holds which code.

Smart lock codes or a rekey for a rental?
A code pays off when the people using a door change often. If you just want old keys to stop working once, rekey.
Choose codes when
Guests, cleaners or tenants change often, or several doors share one owner. You cancel one person's code and nobody else is affected.
Choose a rekey when
You only need the old keys dead once. See lock change and rekey. It costs less than a smart lock.
Whose lock is it?
On a rented door, the lock normally belongs to the owner. A full replacement is a talk with them first. Work on the cylinder already fitted can be arranged by a tenant.
01Can I fit a smart lock on an old mortise door?
Not directly. A smart deadbolt needs a round hole bored through the face of the door, and a mortise lock sits in the door edge. We can bore a second deadbolt above it, or put the keypad on a different door.
02Does my strata have to approve a keypad on my suite door?
Often, yes. A keypad changes the outside plate on a door the corridor can see, and many bylaws cover that. Ask your strata council before you buy. We cannot decide it for them.
03Can you fit a smart lock I already bought?
Yes, on a bored door. Give us the model number on the call, and we will check the backset, door thickness and cylinder before anyone comes out.
04Is a Wi-Fi smart lock better than a Bluetooth one?
Neither is better for every door. Bluetooth is simple and works when you are near the lock. Wi-Fi lets you lock and unlock from anywhere, but it drains the battery faster and needs a signal at the door.
05Will a smart lock open my building fob or lobby door?
No. Lobby doors, parkade gates and building fobs belong to your strata or property manager. A smart lock only controls your own suite or house door, and we never copy or program building fobs.
06Should I use codes or just rekey after a tenant leaves?
If you only need old keys to stop working once, a rekey costs less. If people come and go often, a code you can cancel without cutting anything saves repeat visits.
