Broken case, dead fob or lost pairing: which is it?
Three different faults get described the same way. They are not the same job, and the cheapest one involves buying nothing.
The case is cracked
Worn buttons, a split seam or a case that won't clip shut, with working electronics inside. The board and blade move to a new shell and the car keeps its pairing.
The fob is dead
Water or a hard drop usually kills the board. That needs a new fob, supplied and programmed. A weak battery is worth ruling out first, see car key battery replacement.
The car dropped the pairing
The fob looks fine but the car no longer answers it. That is programming alone, with no part to buy.

A fob the car no longer answers
The fob looks fine, the buttons feel normal, and the car ignores it. We check the battery first, then reprogram the fob to the car at your vehicle.
If the fob is cracked or soaked, we tell you whether a new case or a new fob is the right fix.

A flip key cut and paired
Fold-out blade fobs need the blade cut and the remote paired to the car. We do both together and try every button before we leave.

The badge on the tailgate doesn't decide it. The options your car was built with do.
Read the old fob
The part number and approval marks on the back place it in a family. Read them to us on the call, or send a photo.
No fob left
The VIN answers the same question. Give us year, make, model and VIN and we work from that.
Bought one online
Check the button layout first. A fob with the wrong buttons or the wrong family can pair and still not work properly.

A lost fob keeps working until the car is told otherwise. On many vehicles that means re-enrolling the whole set.

03I lost one fob and still have the other. Can the lost one be shut out?
On many vehicles, yes. The set is re-enrolled with every fob you still hold at the car, and a fob that is not present stops working. Bring all your fobs to the visit.
04Is a cracked fob case worth replacing, or just the shell?
If the board inside still works, a new shell is often enough. If it took water or a hard drop, the board is usually dead and the fob is replaced. We tell you which once it is opened.
05Can you program my condo parkade or lobby fob?
No. Building fobs belong to your strata or property manager, and we never copy or program them. This page covers the fob that starts and unlocks your car.
06What do you need to see before programming a fob?
Photo ID and proof the car is yours, such as the registration, plus the VIN. We check ownership before cutting or programming any car key or fob.
