When your key turns but the engine won't fire, the problem usually isn't the cut — it's the transponder chip not talking to your car's immobiliser. We program that chip on-site anywhere in Vancouver, from Kitsilano to Commercial Drive, so your vehicle recognises the key and starts.
A modern car key is two things in one: a physical blade that turns the lock, and a hidden transponder chip that has to trade a coded signal with your car's immobiliser before the engine will start. Cut the blade wrong and the key won't turn. Program the chip wrong — or not at all — and the key turns but the car stays dead. We handle the chip side, on-site, in your driveway or a downtown parkade.
Since the mid-to-late 1990s, nearly every vehicle sold in Canada uses a transponder (chip) key as an anti-theft measure. Inside the plastic head of the key is a tiny glass or carbon chip with no battery. When you insert the key and turn it, an antenna ring around the ignition cylinder energises the chip, the chip broadcasts a unique code, and the car's immobiliser checks that code against the ones it has stored. Match found, fuel and spark are enabled and the engine cranks. No match, the starter may turn but the car won't run. That handshake is why a freshly cut blade that has never been paired to your car will slot in, turn, and go nowhere.
There are two ways to get a working chip. Cloning copies the code from a key you already have onto a blank chip — the car never knows a second key exists, so it needs no re-programming and works even on vehicles that are hard to program. Cloning is fast and inexpensive, but it only works when you have at least one key the car already accepts. OBD programming plugs into your vehicle's diagnostic port and enrols a brand-new key directly into the immobiliser's memory. It's the route for adding a key the car has never seen, and the only route when every key is lost. Which one we use depends on your make, model, and whether a working key survives — we confirm that on the phone before we roll.

The most common call we get is "I have a spare, but it won't start the car." Nine times out of ten that spare is a mechanical copy that was cut but never had its chip programmed — it locks and unlocks, it turns the ignition, but the immobiliser has never been told to trust it. Bring it to us and, in most cases, we can enrol that existing key into your car in minutes instead of supplying a whole new one. If every key is genuinely gone, we perform an all-keys-lost procedure: the immobiliser is re-initialised through the OBD port and fresh keys are written into it from scratch. This takes longer and needs the right equipment for your specific make, which is exactly why it pays to call a locksmith who confirms coverage for your vehicle before heading out.
